‘TWIGGY’S ROSE’ TO BE NAMED OFFICIALLY AT BBC GARDENERS’ WORLD LIVE IN CELEBRATION OF HER 60th BIRTHDAY
The NEC, Birmingham - Thursday 11 June

Twiggy will be visiting BBC Gardeners’ World Live at The NEC on Thursday 11 June for the official naming of ‘Twiggy’s Rose’. Roses UK, representing British Rose Breeders and Growers and Harkness Roses are delighted to name this brand new rose for Twiggy in celebration of her 60th birthday. The naming ceremony will take place in the RHS Floral Marquee sponsored by Renault at 2.30pm.

"I was delighted and honoured when Marilyn at Roses UK contacted me proposing to name a rose after me for my birthday later this year.  I adore roses, especially fragrant ones and have some beauties in my garden. It was great fun to help choose the colour, shape and fragrance and I’m very much looking forward to ‘meeting’ my rose next week."

‘Twiggy’s Rose’ which is bred by Harkness Roses, is a robust, well-branched bush rose, technically a floribunda, which simply means that it carries its flowers in clusters of blooms per stem. These are clusters to reckon with, they often form massive canopies of blooms, as many as two dozen per branch was not unusual during trials of the rose. The branches are stiff and sturdy, well capable of bearing the weight of such a vast crop of blooms.

The flowers of ‘Twiggy’s Rose’ are a real curiosity. The curiosity is not in the colour, which is light apricot, deepening to a richer shade in late season as light intensity diminishes; nor in the perfume, which is a fresh honey-based aroma carrying a piquante edge. The curiosity is in the difference between the summer and autumn blooms. The summer blooms are double, ruffled and rounded, usually containing around 30 petals. They are perfectly suited to cottage-garden situations, although this really is not a ‘retro-style’ bloom. It is as much at home in modern company as it is with roses in the nostalgic vein. Surprisingly, typical autumn blooms are semi-double, they contain about half the quantity of petals compared with the summer flowers, and they open wide to reveal golden stamens. The reason for the difference isn’t known; nevertheless it’s fun to have two different-looking roses for the price of one.

TWIGGY HONOURED IN NEW YORK

Twiggy is a guest of honour and poster girl at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art’s, annual Costume Institute Benefit in New York on May 4th.  This year’s gala event is being held to mark the opening of a new exhibition celebrating ‘The Model As Muse’ which opens on May 6th and runs until August 9th 2009.  Twiggy is also an honourary member of the exhibition committee, chaired by Marc Jacobs, with co-chairs Kate Moss, Justin Timberlake and Anna Wintour.  

 

The exhibition “will explore the reciprocal relationship between high fashion and evolving ideals of beauty, and will focus on iconic fashion models of the 20th century and their roles in projecting, and sometimes inspiring, the fashion of their respective eras.”

 

Photographs of Twiggy featured in the exhibition include some of those famous Richard Avedon, Bert Stern and Melvin Sokolski shots taken on Twiggy’s first trip to New York. Both the Gala Night and Exhibition are sponsored by American Vogue.  Bergdorf Goodman, the famous department store on 5th Avenue, is already creating fabulous window displays using exhibition photographs, featuring several of Twiggy, to mark the occasion.  It really is going to be a spectacular event.

NEW M&S TV ADVERTISEMENT

Back at home, Twiggy is as busy as ever.  She is currently shooting a new M&S TV advertisment to mark the store’s 125 year anniversary, and her brand new collection for Littlewoods Shopdirect is having the finishing touches applied ready for a photo shoot in May.  In addition, she has also been working with the designers at Ashley Wilde on further ideas for her bed linen range.

Twiggy continues to have a high profile in the press having recently appeared on the covers of I-D Magazine, She and Good Housekeeping all in the same month!  With more new projects in the pipeline, this promises to be a busy and exciting summer.

Twiggy and Erin O'Connor joined Stuart Rose to open the new M&S store in the Westfield Shopping Centre on October 30th, 2008.


TELEVISION APPEARANCES

Twiggy is scheduled to appear on Ireland's daytime chat show THE AFTERNOON SHOW on Thursday November 20th @ 15:00 on RTÉ One.

Twiggy is scheduled to appear on Ireland's premier chat show THE LATE, LATE SHOW on Friday October 17th @ 21:30 on RTÉ One.

Twiggy is also set to appear on the ITV1 daytime show LOOSE WOMEN broadcast on Tuesday October 21st, @12:30 on ITV1.

FASHION TARGETS BREAST CANCER

Twiggy models the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer T-shirt, which raises funds for Breakthrough Breast Cancer (visit www.targetbreastcancer.org.uk to find out more). 

“Like lots of people, I’ve lost friends to breast cancer," says Twiggy.
