Croftview Greyhound Re-homing Kennels: Greyhound Trust - August, 2004

Dear Friends,

Last week I had a very moving experience. I visited Croftview Greyhound Re-homing Kennels, part of the Greyhound Trust.

Its manager Cathy Mantripp works tirelessly with the other members of staff to look after and re-home these beautiful Greyhounds, whose racing life is over.  They never put any of the dogs down and aim to re-home all who pass through their doors, and they have a marvelous record of doing this.

The kennels are in a beautiful part of Kent near Meopham. I became aware of them from a flier in my local vets asking for a home for two sweet 10 year old dogs who had been left with them when their owners emigrated!

“Gracie” and “Joe” have been used to a happy home for the last 7 years and can’t understand what has happened to them. They need a home together and the flier so touched me – I offered to try and help get them a home. I called a fellow animal lover, who is editor of a national newspaper and he agreed to do a story on Gracie and Joe – hence I arrived at Croftview.

Although it is always sad to see animals in kennels, at least these are well run and clean, and the dogs, all of which are in good health have lots of exercising fields and outdoor runs.  But of course no kennels, however well run, can compensate for a loving family home. Cathy asked me if I’d become their patron and I was proud to accept.

Of course they are desperately in need of funds so if anyone can help with either funding or re-homing a dog – all of which I met, and they were all gorgeous and friendly – please contact Cathy at Rgtcroftview@jmantripp.freeserve.co.uk or call 01474 815 273.

By the way “Gracie” and “Joe” are the gentlest, sweetest golden beige dogs.  I walked with them and spent some time with them and see why they need a home together, they do everything together and after being left by their owners to part them would be too traumatic. Please do all you can to help.

With thanks...

Twiggy - The Face Of Viyella Autumn / Winter 2003 Collection

Viyella - Autumn / Winter 2003Stylish British fashion brand Viyella is delighted to announce timeless British beauty Twiggy as the 'face' of the collection for Autumn/Winter 2003.

"With her own sense of style, Twiggy proves that women in their fifties continue to look great, demanding stylish, quality clothes to suit their attitude and lifestyle. Viyella's latest A/W 03 collection has evolved to transcend the age barrier," says Viyella marketing controller, Lynda Moen.

"The challenge was to find someone our customers would relate to, given that many of them grew up in the Sixties. We wanted someone who exuded energy, had innate style, a uniquely British sense of fun and is relevant to today's woman. The choice was obvious – Twiggy," concludes Moen.

Halcyon Haven Animal Sanctuary Charity Appeal

Dear Friends,

A couple of years ago I got a letter from an animal sanctuary in Cumbria called The Halcyon Haven Animal Sanctuary.  When they wrote to me I so respected what they were doing for the animals they rescue that I agreed to become their patron and try and help to raise funds for them when I could.

The Halcyon Haven Animal Sanctuary is a small sanctuary, caring for over 70 animals.  They rely purely on private fundraising and donations.

Sadly on Friday 7th March 2003, in the early hours, the sanctuary was broken into.  Some 19 animals were massacred.  6 adult rabbits shot, 5 baby rabbits (just over one week old) shot or bashed to death, two adult guinea pigs beaten to death, their backs broken, 5 cats shot, 1 cat burnt – she did not die until Saturday morning.

A lot of animals ran out of the sanctuary, finding places to hide, others escaped into the rafters of the building.  They have recovered most of the cats that were missing.  So there are 48 cats back, but sadly 3 of them are still unaccounted for.

There is no living accommodation down on that part of the farm where the sanctuary is located, there being no running water, plumbing facilities or electricity.  Thus it is difficult to be there all the time.

The sanctuary is appealing to the general public for donations, to help the trustees find a safer haven for the animals, where David and Geny Kouga-Webb, the founders of HHAS, can live permanently alongside the sanctuary buildings.  Cheque donations to be made payable to: -

If you can help - please do.  Many thanks.

Twiggy Joins The Fight Against Fur

Recently Twiggy made a statement proclaiming her views on the anti fur campaign of which she is a staunch supporter. The following statement was supplied by anti fur group PETA.

"In this day and age there is absolutely no excuse to wear fur. We don’t need it for warmth – it is worn purely for vanity. Unforgivable for all the cruelty this causes. It’s up to women not to buy fur – if there is no demand, there is no market. So please join me in the boycott of fur in the marketplace and hopefully save a lot of suffering for creatures without a voice." - Twiggy
